Drag apps in. Zap their leftovers out.

Dropping an app in the Trash leaves its caches, settings and background helpers behind. ZapIt finds them in every standard macOS location and moves the lot to the Trash, so a reinstall starts fresh.

Free for your first 2 apps. macOS 14 or later, Apple Silicon and Intel. Verify the download

Animated preview: three apps are dropped onto ZapIt, their leftover files are listed, and everything is moved to the Trash with a summary of what was removed.

Try a zap right here

Drag a sample app into the window, or tap, click or press Enter on it. Add a few, uncheck anything you'd keep, then move the rest to the Trash.

The interactive demo needs JavaScript. In the app, you drag one or more apps onto the ZapIt window. Each one gets its own list of leftover files, which you can review before moving everything to the Trash.

Where leftovers hide

An app spreads files across a dozen folders you never open. ZapIt searches every standard location and matches files strictly to the app you dropped.

App data and settings

What the app saved while you used it.

  • Application Supportincluding nested vendor folders
  • Preferencesincluding Preferences/ByHost
  • Containers~/Library/Containers
  • Group Containers~/Library/Group Containers
  • Application Scripts~/Library/Application Scripts
  • Saved Application State~/Library/Saved Application State

Caches and web data

Often the biggest leftovers by size.

  • Caches~/Library/Caches
  • HTTPStorages~/Library/HTTPStorages
  • Cookies~/Library/Cookies
  • WebKit data~/Library/WebKit
  • Per-user temp and cache folders/private/var/folders

Background items

Helpers that keep running after the app is gone.

  • LaunchAgents~/Library/LaunchAgents, /Library/LaunchAgents
  • LaunchDaemons/Library/LaunchDaemons
  • Privileged helper tools/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools

Logs and install records

The paper trail an app leaves.

  • Logs~/Library/Logs
  • Crash reportsLogs/DiagnosticReports
  • Installer package receipts/private/var/db/receipts

Matched by identifier, not by name

ZapIt reads the app's bundle identifiers, including its helpers and extensions, plus its app group IDs. Only files that carry those IDs are listed.

  • com.quillo.mac
  • com.quillo.mac.helper
  • com.quillo.mac.share
  • group.com.quillo
  • Caches/com.quillo.mac
  • Containers/com.quillo.mac.share
  • Caches/com.quillotype.fontsA different app. Left alone.

Outside the folders

Things macOS remembers about an app that aren't plain files.

  • Cached preferencescleared, so old settings don't come back
  • Launch Services registrationremoved, so Finder forgets the app

Before anything is removed

  • The running app is quit first.
  • Its background launch agents and daemons are unloaded.
  • macOS system apps protected by SIP are off limits.
  • ZapIt won't uninstall itself.

One job, done thoroughly

ZapIt removes the apps you no longer want, together with the files they spread around your Mac, and shows you every file before it goes.

A whole batch at once

Drop one app or several. Each gets its own section with its icon, file count, All and None buttons, and a remove button. You can keep dropping more while you review.

Everything goes to the Trash

Including files that need admin rights, so you can restore any of it from Finder. One Touch ID or password prompt covers the whole batch.

  • Deep enough for a fresh reinstall

Support files, caches, containers, launch agents, helper tools, receipts and temp folders, plus the cached preferences and Launch Services entry.

  • Careful by default

Files are matched to the app's own identifiers, so other apps' files stay put. System apps protected by SIP can't be removed.

  • A summary for every zap

See how many files and how much space each app freed, and anything that couldn't be removed. Drop another app to start again.

  • Native and private

A SwiftUI app for macOS 14 and later. Scanning and removal happen on your Mac, and a licensed Mac doesn't phone home to check its license.

Three steps, one prompt

  1. Drop your apps

Drag one app or a handful from Applications onto the ZapIt window.

  2. Review what it found

Each app lists its leftover files. Uncheck anything you'd rather keep.

  3. Move it all to the Trash

Confirm once with Touch ID or your password. A summary shows what was removed.

Try it on two apps. Pay once if it earns its place.

Questions

How do I verify my download is authentic?

Check the installer's SHA-256 hash. It should be:

6694aa0b71f9750bdd485e7dcf6eca31fc54c9cc329808283889a86ef70914a8

To verify on macOS:

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Run shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/ZapIt-Installer.dmg
  3. Compare the output with the hash above.

If the hashes match, your download is verified and safe to install.

Can I remove several apps at once?

Yes. Drag several apps onto the window together, or keep dropping more while you review. Each app gets its own section with its icon, file count, All and None selection, and a remove button if you change your mind.

Where does ZapIt look for leftover files?

Application Support (including vendor folders), Caches, Preferences (including ByHost), Containers, Group Containers, Application Scripts, Saved Application State, HTTPStorages, Cookies, WebKit data, Logs and crash reports, LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemons, privileged helper tools, installer package receipts, and the per-user temp and cache folders. It also clears cached preferences and the app's Launch Services registration. See the full map.

Will it remove files that belong to other apps?

ZapIt matches files strictly by the app's bundle identifiers, including its helpers and extensions, and its app group IDs. It doesn't match on loose name fragments, so it doesn't sweep up other apps' files. You also see every file before anything is removed and can uncheck what you want to keep.

What happens to the files it removes?

They go to the Trash, including files that need admin rights. Nothing is permanently deleted unless you empty the Trash. You confirm once with Touch ID or your password for the whole batch.

What if I remove something by mistake?

Open the Trash in Finder, select the item and choose File > Put Back. Items that needed administrator rights can’t use Put Back, so drag them back to the folder shown in ZapIt’s log. Everything ZapIt removed stays in the Trash until you empty it.

Can it remove apps that came with macOS?

No. System apps protected by System Integrity Protection (SIP) are off limits, and ZapIt won't uninstall itself.

Does ZapIt need Full Disk Access?

ZapIt suggests granting it, because macOS hides some protected folders from apps that don't have it. With Full Disk Access, ZapIt can see leftovers in those folders too. You can turn it on in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access.

How do I buy the license?

Download ZapIt and use your 2 free zaps. When you're ready, choose Purchase License inside the app. It opens a Square checkout linked to your Mac's hardware ID, and the license is activated on that Mac automatically, with no codes to enter.

Is this a subscription?

No. It's a one-time payment of $9.99 for unlimited zaps on your Mac. No recurring charges.

Which Macs does it run on?

Any Mac with Apple Silicon or an Intel processor running macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

Does ZapIt collect data about my apps?

No. Scanning and removal happen on your Mac, and ZapIt doesn't collect the names of apps you remove, file paths or usage analytics. Read the privacy policy for the details.

Make room for the apps you actually use

Your first two zaps are free. After that, it's $9.99 once.
